Academic Researcher, Curator, and Creative Collaborator
August 2016 to present
Julie’s work spans academic research, scholarly publishing, and collaborative projects, integrating rigorous analysis, creative practice, interdisciplinary collaboration, and applied engagement to generate knowledge, inform policy, and support community-focused initiatives.
Julie writes peer-reviewed journal papers and articles for blogs and magazines. In 2018, she authored Adoption in the Digital Age: Opportunities and Challenges for the 21st Century (Palgrave Macmillan) and collaborated with Dr. Sylvia Schroer to provide written evidence for the UK Parliament. Her most recent work includes a co-authored chapter with Zoe Camper in the peer-reviewed volume Society and Technology: Promoting Well-Being in a Digital Age? (Cognella, 2025), which focuses on the Creativity Offers Us a New Formula for Life exhibition. She continues to develop scholarly outputs exploring the intersections of creativity, technology, and social wellbeing.
As co-lead of the Augmented Society Network, Julie worked with Zoe Camper and the RSA Thematic Network (US) and international researchers on a report reimagining education, serving as senior editor and lead author on one of the papers.
She also co-developed the international project Creativity Offers Us a New Formula for Life with Zoe Camper, exploring how creativity drives innovation and provides solutions to global challenges. Julie and Zoe led all aspects of the exhibition, bringing together participants in digital and physical spaces to merge art, science, and technology for societal impact. Exhibitions ran at RSA House, London (2023), The Hive, Worcester (2024), and the Mayor’s Gallery, Las Vegas (2025), involving 32 contributors from across the globe.
Between 2023 and 2025, Julie co-led a two-year, voluntary research-intensive project examining a major local infrastructure planning application in a rural community. She served as the primary researcher, leading the majority of evidence gathering and analysis, while the report was co-written with a colleague. A third team member provided supporting evidence to the project.
The project involved sustained engagement with multiple stakeholders, including the parish council, a district councillor, the Mayor of Lincoln, the local Member of Parliament, and local residents. Julie coordinated research, analysed and synthesised technical, environmental, and policy documentation, and prepared evidence-based submissions aligned with UK and national planning policies. She also developed clear communication materials including presentations to explain complex planning and regulatory processes to stakeholders and community members.
The work culminated in a 150+ page report submitted to Lincolnshire County Council. Julie’s research was informed by attending three online conferences focused on infrastructure planning, environmental assessment, and community impact, ensuring the project reflected current best practice and policy guidance. Through this work, she developed extensive skills in applied research, policy analysis, stakeholder engagement, project management, and professional communication.
