Independent Researcher, Curator and Practicing Artist
August 2016 to present
Julie's work involves writing academic papers for journal submission and short articles for blog and magazine publications. In 2018, she authored an academic book titled Adoption in the Digital Age: Opportunities and Challenges for the 21st Century published by Palgrave Macmillan. Additionally, she collaborated with Dr. Sylvia Schroer on providing written evidence for the UK Parliament.
As co-lead of the Augmented Society Network, Julie collaboratively worked with the RSA Thematic Network based in the US, alongside other international education and researchers, on an educational report to reimagine education. Julie was both the senior editor for the report and the lead on one of the papers within the report.
Working with the co-lead of the Augmented Society Network Zoe Camper (co-founder) they developed an international collaborative project Creativity Offers Us A New Formula For Life. The project explored the different ways creativity drives innovation, science, and manufacturing; how it could provide solutions to world problems; and help us to adapt to change. The Augmented Society Network extended an invitation to individuals and organizations to participate in this creative endeavor, both in the digital realm and in real life. This collaborative space aimed to merge art, science, and manufacturing to drive positive change by fostering connections between people, communities, and the world at large.
The project Creativity Offers Us A New Formula For Life was first exhibited at RSA House, London, in 2023, followed by Creativity Offers Us A New Formula For Life 2.0 at The Hive, Worcester, in 2024. It brought together contributors from the UK, US, Italy, Canada, Morocco, Malta, the Philippines, Ireland, and Colombia. In 2025, the exhibition traveled to the Mayor’s Gallery in Las Vegas, running from June 18 to September 12.
The project is included in the peer-reviewed volume Society and Technology: Promoting Well-Being in a Digital Age?, edited by Dr. Hannah R. Marston and published by Cognella in 2025. This edited collection features interdisciplinary contributions from scholars and experts by experience representing the UK, the US, the Netherlands, Canada, Romania, and North Macedonia.
Julie’s current work builds on her established record of academic research, publishing, and international collaboration. She is engaged in developing new scholarly outputs for journal submission, alongside contributions aimed at wider audiences, with a particular focus on the intersections of creativity, technology, and social well-being. Through her co-leadership of the Augmented Society Network, Julie continues to foster international partnerships and lead collaborative initiatives that bring together art, science, and education. Her ongoing projects seek to advance critical dialogue, generate innovative practices, and contribute to the broader academic and policy landscape.
